Who we are
Navigating Nihon is a website providing practical guides to life in Japan, operated by Chloé Agostini. Our website address is https://navigatingnihon.com. For questions about this policy or your personal data, contact navinihon@gmail.com.
Information we collect
Depending on how you use the website, we may process information you submit in comments or emails, technical information such as your IP address and browser details, and information about your interactions with our pages through analytics and advertising services.
We use this information to operate and secure the website, respond to messages, moderate comments, understand how our content is used and, when enabled, display advertising.
Comments
If you leave a comment, WordPress collects the information shown in the comment form, together with your IP address and browser user agent to help detect spam. Your approved comment and displayed name are public; your email address is not displayed publicly.
If Gravatar is used to display profile pictures, a hash derived from your email address may be sent to Automattic. See Automattic’s privacy policy for details.
Cookies and your choices
The website uses cookies and similar technologies for essential functions and may use them for analytics and advertising. CookieYes manages the cookie consent interface and records your preferences.
Essential cookies support functions such as security, administrator login and remembering consent choices. Optional cookies require your consent where applicable. You can accept or reject optional categories through the consent interface and change your preferences using the cookie settings control available on the website.
If you choose to save your details when commenting, WordPress may store your name, email address and website in cookies for one year. Administrator login cookies and preference cookies are also used when accessing the administration area.
Google Analytics
We use Google Analytics through Google Site Kit to understand website traffic and improve our content. Depending on consent and configuration, Google may process information such as pages visited, interactions, device and browser details, approximate location and online identifiers.
For information about Google’s processing, see Google’s privacy policy and how Google uses information from websites that use its services.
Advertising
We are preparing to use Google AdSense. As of the date of this policy, our site approval is pending.
When advertising is enabled, Google and other advertising providers may use cookies or similar technologies to deliver and measure ads. Advertising cookies can allow ads to be selected based on visits to this website and other websites. Personalised advertising is subject to your consent where required.
You can manage personalised advertising preferences through Google My Ad Center and manage optional advertising cookies through this website’s consent interface.
Hosting, Jetpack and backups
The website is hosted with OVHcloud. Hosting infrastructure may process technical logs, including IP addresses and requested pages, to operate and protect the service.
We use Jetpack services provided by Automattic for website functionality and performance, including image delivery. Requests to these services may disclose technical information such as your IP address and browser details. See Automattic’s privacy policy.
Website backups are created using UpdraftPlus and stored in Google Drive. These backups may contain information held in the website database, including comments and administrator account details.
External links, embedded content and Ko-fi
Our pages may link to external websites or include embedded content. Embedded content may collect information and use cookies in a similar way to visiting the provider’s website directly. These services have their own privacy policies.
If you support Navigating Nihon through Ko-fi, your interaction and payment are handled by Ko-fi and its payment providers. We do not receive your full payment card details. Ko-fi may share supporter information with us according to your choices and its service settings. See Ko-fi’s privacy policy.
Legal bases
Where applicable, we rely on consent for optional analytics and advertising technologies, and on our legitimate interests to operate and secure the website, moderate comments and respond to enquiries. We may also process information to comply with legal obligations.
Sharing and international processing
Information may be processed by the service providers described above where necessary for their functions. We do not sell personal data.
Some providers may process information outside the European Economic Area. Details of their processing locations and applicable transfer safeguards are available in their privacy policies.
Data retention
We retain information according to its purpose: published comments while they remain relevant to the discussion, correspondence for as long as needed to handle the enquiry, and technical information for website operation and security. Information may be retained longer where required by law.
Cookie expiry dates, analytics retention and backup retention depend on the settings of the relevant services. Deleted information may remain in restricted backups until those backups are replaced or expire.
Your rights
Depending on applicable law, you may request access to, correction or deletion of your personal data, restriction of processing, or a portable copy of eligible information. You may also object to processing based on legitimate interests and withdraw consent at any time without affecting the lawfulness of earlier processing.
To make a request, email navinihon@gmail.com. We may need to verify your identity before responding.
You may lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. In France, this is the CNIL.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when our services or data practices change. The date at the top indicates the latest revision.
